Type: Notechidnopsis tessellata (Pillans) Lavranos & Bleck
Etymology: notos (Gr.) - south, Echidnopsis - the former name; allusion to its southeren distribution.
Distribution: W South Africa (S Namaqualand).

History: Plant was first discovered by Percy Ross-Frames in 1929 and described by Pillans as Caralluma tessellata in 1933. Hans Herre recollected it in 1931. His plant was published by Nel as Caralluma serpentina in 1935. Both were moved to genus Echidnopsis by White and Sloane in 1937. Lavranos and Bleck moved it togerther with E. columnaris to a new genus Notechidnopsis in 1985. Meve and Liede transfered N. columnaris to Richtersveldia (2002).
